About LEA

What is LEA?
Sponsored by the International Leadership Association (ILA), the Leadership Education Academy (LEA) was designed by leadership educators in higher education with a variety of educational backgrounds, programming and classroom experiences, and association involvement. The academy is intended to be a complementary experience to other established professional development programs for leadership educators. Structured as a cohort-style program, LEA is intentionally designed to advance one's ability to teach leadership in a variety of capacities. LEA participants will enhance their knowledge of leadership foundations and theories while exploring and practicing a variety of instructional strategies and pedagogies for use in curricular and co-curricular leadership education. LEA is limited to 72 participants in order to foster collaboration and networking in a supportive and hands-on learning environment where participants and facilitators share best practices. What will I experience at LEA?
LEA is an inclusive program designed to take participants through facilitated experiential sessions on both content and pedagogy. Topics include leadership theory and development, learning outcomes and assessment, curriculum design, and instructional strategies within the context of curricular and co-curricular leadership programs.

Academy facilitators — including top leadership educators and published authors from the field — will model best practices and provide opportunities for participants to engage in a practice-feedback-reflection loop. While the curriculum will be intentionally rigorous and comprehensive, the environment will remain interactive and focus on peer and mentor-guided feedback. This format will lend itself to a small cohort-based approach that supports interactive learning, focused individual attention and development, as well as both formal and informal opportunities for participants and facilitators to connect.

How is LEA unique?

  • Immersive: LEA is designed to be an immersive experience for participants, providing opportunities to learn a variety of content in a structured, process-oriented environment through a singular, connected curriculum that spans across three days.
  • Cohort-Based: At LEA, participants will work, learn, practice, and provide feedback together.
  • Opportunity for feedback and mentoring: LEA is deliberately inclusive, providing opportunities to interact and develop relationships with diverse peers in a variety of leadership education settings. Accordingly, occasions for peer- and mentor-driven feedback are built into the program curriculum.
  • Experiential: LEA is intentionally "hands on;" meaning that opportunities to practice in experiential, active learning environments are essential to the curriculum. Participants will be actors, not spectators.
  • Intentional: LEA is purposely and intentionally designed to target key learning outcomes supported by leadership education literature and the scholarship of teaching and learning.

Who should attend LEA?
LEA is a three and a half-day immersive training program for current or aspiring instructional and programmatic leadership educators in higher education. Anyone interested in increasing their foundational knowledge of leadership theory and teaching pedagogy, from new to seasoned leadership educators, are encouraged to attend. This may include Student Affairs professionals, graduate students, and faculty from a variety of disciplines who do or will teach leadership in credit-based courses or co-curricular programs. Those who attend will gain important foundational knowledge and skills in leadership theory and teaching pedagogy.

About Conference Co-Chair COREY SEEMILLER

Corey Seemiller, Ph.D., serves as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Leadership Studies in Education and Organizations at Wright State University teaching undergraduate courses in organizational leadership and graduate courses in leadership development. Prior to her role at Wright State University, Dr. Seemiller served as the Director of Leadership Programs at the University of Arizona and the Director of Leadership, Learning, and Assessment at OrgSync, Inc. She is the author of The Student Leadership Competencies Guidebook and associated tools to help educators develop intentional curriculum that enhances leadership competency development, and Generation Z Goes to College, which aims to prepare college educators to best serve and develop Generation Z students. ×

About Conference Co-Chair DAN JENKINS

Dan Jenkins, Ph.D., is Director and Assistant Professor of Leadership & Organizational Studies at the University of Southern Maine. He received his doctorate in Curriculum & Instruction as well as an M.A. in Political Science from the University of South Florida and a B.S. in Communication Studies from The Florida State University. Dan has published more than 30 articles on leadership education and assessment and is an associate editor for the Journal of Leadership Studies. He has also presented research and facilitated workshops on leadership pedagogy, curriculum, and course design, around the world. Dan is a past chair of the International Leadership Association Leadership Education Member Interest Group and former Secretary of the Association of Leadership Educators.

About RIAN SATTERWHITE

Rian Satterwhite serves as Director of the Holden Center for Leadership and Community Engagement at the University of Oregon. A long-time member of ILA, Rian has served as chair of Leadership Education MIG and helped co-found the Sustainability Leadership Learning Community. Author of the Deep Systems Leadership model and numerous book chapters and articles exploring leadership contexts such as long timescales, complex adaptive systems, and peace and sustainability, Rian is interested in how leadership theory and practice evolve as we increasingly recognize our place within complex natural systems.

About KATHY GUTHRIE

Kathy L. Guthrie, Ph.D., is associate professor in the higher education program, director of the Leadership Learning Research Center, and coordinator of the Undergraduate Certificate in Leadership Studies at Florida State University. She currently serves as associate editor for the New Directions in Student Leadership series and editor of the Contemporary Perspectives in Leadership Learning book series. Her research focuses on leadership learning outcomes, environment of leadership and civic education, and technology in leadership education. Guthrie was awarded as a 2017 ACPA Diamond Honoree, 2015 Florida State Transformation through Teaching Award, and College of Education Teaching Award in 2014.

About DAVE ROSCH

Dave Rosch serves as an Assistant Professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he teaches leadership classes and conducts research on the impact of leadership training initiatives. He has served as Chair of the Leadership Scholarship Member Interest Group in the International Leadership Association, the co-coordinator of the National Leadership Symposium, in addition to his role in the Leadership Educators Academy. He serves as the Senior Research Fellow for LeaderShape, Inc. He has a PhD in Higher Education from Syracuse University, an MS in Student Affairs from Colorado State University, and a BS in Psychology from Binghamton University. ×

About KERRY PRIEST

Kerry Priest, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor in the Staley School of Leadership Studies at Kansas State University, where she teaches undergraduate and graduate courses. Her research agenda explores the intersections of leadership development and engaged teaching and learning in higher education, with a particular interest on questions that emerge from interpretative, collaborative frameworks emphasizing civic leadership and social change. Her scholarship has focused on leader identity, leadership educator identity, and high-impact educational practices/critical pedagogies for leadership education. Kerry also has experience working in the areas of leadership training, curriculum design, and program/project management. Kerry earned her Master's Degree from the University of Georgia and Ph.D. from Virginia Tech. ×

About MINDY McNUTT

Mindy S. McNutt, Ph.D., is a tenured Associate Professor of Leadership at Wright State University. She teaches in all leadership programs in her department—the bachelor's in Organizational Leadership; the master's in Leadership Development; and the doctorate in Organizational Studies, where she created the doctoral internship program. Mindy has engaged in leadership curriculum development for over 30 years for high school youth through doctoral students. At Wright State and several area community colleges, she held a variety of leadership positions at the executive level including academic vice president and campus dean. Her research interests include leadership education, transformational and servant leadership, women in leadership, organizational culture, and leader values. ×

About PRESTON YARBOROUGH

Preston Yarborough, Ph.D., is a Senior Project Director and Faculty for the Center for Creative Leadership, specializing in college student leadership. Preston completed his doctorate in Counseling and Educational Development at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG). His research interests include leader identity development, leadership coaching, as well as group process and facilitation. Previous to his stint at CCL, Preston served as the Assistant Director of Leadership in UNCG's Office of Leadership and Service-Learning where he taught leadership classes, designed leadership programs, and provided internal and external consulting services. His greatest joy is raising his two children, 16 year old Nathan and 13 year old Maggie, with Mendy, his wife of 21 years.

About DEBORAH HARLEY-McCLASKEY

Deborah Harley-McClaskey, Ph.D., is a graduate of the University of South Florida and East Tennessee State University. Excellence through leadership, service and civic engagement are personal passions. As an Associate Professor and director of Academic Leadership Programs at ETSU, she developed the Minor in Leadership Studies and the Graduate Certificate in Community Leadership. She served on the team that developed the on-line master's in strategic leadership for the state-wide E-Campus Program, as a consultant to over 30 organizations on personal leadership development. She is the author of the textbook, Developing Human Service Leaders, published by Sage in January of 2016.

About TODD DEAL

Todd Deal, Ph.D. is Executive Director & Leadership Studies Professor in Georgia Southern University's Office of Leadership & Community Engagement. Todd's academic background is in the sciences, his bachelors and Ph.D. degrees are in chemistry, but his heart has always been firmly rooted in teaching & learning. An insatiable learner, Todd recently earned a graduate certificate in Leadership from Northeastern University, and credits his shift to leadership education to his Learner strength. Todd & his team at Georgia Southern have developed award-winning leadership education and community engagement programs. Todd also owns his own leadership education and development business, TDLearning, Inc., where he works with corporate, governmental, and nonprofit partners to enhance both personal and team performance. In his spare time (what little he has), Todd is an avid cyclist, an aspiring backyard chef and baker, and has been the public address voice of Georgia Southern baseball and football since 1992. Todd is married to his high school best friend, Karen, and they have two college-aged daughters - one an artist (graphic design) and the other a scientist (biochemistry).

I have been working in leadership education for a while. Should I attend LEA?

LEA is a foundational program focused on both leadership education content and pedagogy. The program could be valuable for anyone with any level of experience, however the focus of LEA is on those new to leadership education.

Leadership education is only one part of my job. Should I attend LEA?
Absolutely! Regardless of your department or job title, if you are creating and implementing leadership programs or courses then LEA is for you! We will spend time discussing what to teach and how to teach it, through both curricular and co-curricular experiences.
